“We are spirits. That bodies should be lent us, while they can afford us pleasure, assist us in acquiring knowledge, or in doing good to our fellow-creatures, is a kind of benevolent act of God. When they become unfit for these purposes and afford us pain instead of pleasure, instead of an aid become an encumbrance, and answer none of the intentions for which they were given, it is equally kind and benevolent that a way is provided by which we may rid them. Death is that way.”
Ben Franklin Philadelphia, 23rd February, 1756
This 63 year old bag of bones is slowly but surely failing, and that’s a fact. That’s ok. What? Folks may be asking? Well, let me take a short moment and explain. The words Ben Franklin used as he spoke at a funeral gave us two pictures. One, there is a loving God and two, these bodies are going to give out. Because I believe there is a loving God who promised me eternal life in heaven because of grace I can live without fear. Even though this body falls apart, we can only do so much to keep this earthly tent going. So we should be thinking of the permanent structure God has planned for us in heaven. He said He is preparing a place for us with streets of gold. The gold rush folks are going to flip out.
God tells us in the gospel of Matthew that we should consider our eternal future and think ahead and invest in things that will last forever. What will last forever? God and people. So how are your investments going? The most important investments are your relationships. One your relationship with God and two, your relationships with family, friends and others. God never left out others. He told us to treat others the way we want to be treated. While we tarry on this little blue rock, do what is most important. Invest your energy in a relationship with God The Father through Jesus the Son and the creativity and conviction of the Holy Spirit. Life is about not what you know – but who you know.
