Hello, Pastor Matt Here, One thing interesting about this letter to Philemon is that it carried a heavy load. According to Roman law it was within Philemon’s rights to have Onesimus executed for running away. The law really imposed no limits on the power of a master over a slave. It does not state if Onesimus needed convincing from Paul to go back to Philemon and possibly face death or if the thought of death had lost its sting entirely. I like to think it was the latter.
However Paul is writing to Philemon basically saying, “I’m sending Onesimus back to you and I know this man has done you wrong and deserves punishment, but please be merciful and consider him like he is my own son.” Paul goes on to state whatever Onesimus owes, he will cover it.
Josh highlighted for us Sunday the fact we can draw a parallel between this event and the gospel message. We, like Onesimus, deserve death and punishment, but Jesus took that upon himself and adopted us into his family so we can have freedom and life. Romans 6:23 states, “For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life through Christ Jesus our Lord.” It’s all a matter of your heart in accepting this free gift.
A better life starts with small steps in the right direction, and next thing you know, you have traveled miles. Look for small ways to serve him, and you will find them. If you don’t know where to start, start with getting together and getting more into your Bible this week.
